Obituary for Alice Hahlen-Lui

August 27, 1951 - June 5, 2019

Alice Mei-Mui HÄHLEN-LUI, age 67, of Burnaby, British Columbia passed away at home unexpectedly on June 5, 2019, due to sudden cardiac arrest. Born in Guangzhou, China on August 27, 1951 to LUI Wai Zean (father) and LEE Shiu Ying (mother), Alice was the fifth of nine children. Alice spent most of her happy childhood with her parents and siblings in Singapore and Hong Kong. From 1956 to 1961, Alice attended the Havelock Primary School in Singapore. At the age of 10, the family moved to Hong Kong; Alice studied at the Rosaryhill School and received her high school diploma in 1968. In school, Alice loved to draw and was a strong netball and basketball player.

Starting out as an office clerk in Hong Kong at the age of 18, Alice soon switched career to become a flight attendant, first with Northwest Airline, then with KLM. She loved her job and the opportunities to travel. And each month, Alice generously and selflessly gave a good portion of her paycheck to her parents to help support her younger siblings.

While flying with KLM, she met a handsome colleague, Marc Hählen, from the Netherlands. The two fell madly in love and married in December 1987. Together, they had two lovely daughters, Valerie and Stephanie, both born in Hong Kong.

In 1995, Alice and Marc immigrated with the children to Vancouver, Canada, and became Canadian citizens in 2001. They both explored new careers in their adopted country. For the past 13 years, Alice had been working as a security officer, most recently at the Vancouver Convention Center with Genesis Security. Often on duty for night and graveyard shifts, she had enjoyed patrolling the grounds of exhibition and convention events in the wee hours.

In 2006, Alice and Marc parted ways, and Alice continued to raise her daughters as a single mom. Valerie and Stephanie were her absolute pride and joy. Stephanie graduated with honors from Capilano University in 2016 with a BA in Business and an advanced diploma in Marketing, and Valerie graduated from Vancouver Community College with a degree in Culinary Arts in 2010; she received her Red Seal Certification as a professional chef in March of this year.

A loving and devoted mother, a beloved daughter, a cherished sister, a doting aunt, and a kind and most generous soul, Alice is sorely missed by her entire extended family, and her friends and colleagues. In addition to her two daughters Valerie and Stephanie Hählen of Burnaby, British Columbia, and former husband Marc Hählen of Victoria, British Columbia, Alice is survived by her 97-year-old mother Lui Lee Shiu Ying of Hong Kong, and her seven siblings and their spouses: June and Kam Chung Ko of Hong Kong; Daisy and Ho Kai Chan of Liverpool, England; Aldric and Margaret Lui of Singapore; Patrick and Jenny Lui of Guangzhou, China; Patricia Lui of Hong Kong; Amy Lui and Canede Wong of Burnaby, British Columbia; and Adonica Lui and Sean Perrone of Watertown, Massachusetts, USA.

Alice is also survived by 10 nephews and nieces and their spouses, and 11 great-nephews and -nieces in various parts of the world. And she leaves behind many cousins and their families who remember her warmly and grieve her loss. Last, but not least, Luna, Valerie’s beloved doggie, will miss her “Grandma” dearly as well. Alice is predeceased by her father Lui Wai Zean; eldest brother Lui Kwok Keen; and brother-in-law Alec Keung.

Christian funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, June 21 at the Mountain View Cemetery Celebration Hall, 5455 Fraser Street, Vancouver, British Columbia. Reception and viewing between 12:30pm and 1:00pm. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Cremation will be private. Alice’s remains will rest in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby, British Columbia.
