Obituary for Gilberto Chang

September 4, 1944 – January 8, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Gilberto Chang on January 8, 2024. He was born in Lima, Peru on September 4, 1944.

Our father was a scholar at heart. He completed his Civil Engineering degree from The National University of Engineering in Lima Peru in 1970 at the top of his class. His work was so precise that his thesis was used at a textbook for many years. He stayed as a professor at the University until he left to form his own company where he built hospitals, prisons, high rises and many homes. He left Lima, Peru for Vancouver Canada in 1977 to join his parents. He worked hard in various companies in the construction industry as a site superintendent. He specialized in concrete form.

Gilberto was an intelligent gentle man that loved his family dearly. He was happiest when he was laughing and cuddling his grandkids. He is survived by his loving wife Maria who he shared 54 years of marriage; his son Gilbert (Tito), his wife Erin; his daughter Meylin, her husband Stephen and the grandchildren who call him "Acun or Acuny"; Sofia, Alex, Olivia, Lily, Ava and Catalina. He also had several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews in Peru who will miss him. He loved children and had endless patience with babies. He could calm any screaming grandchild with his gentle swaying and soothing humming.

He loved to learn about animals, airplanes, the environment and was very interested in world history. He was often called "Maestro" or "Professor" at the dialysis clinic for his world knowledge. One of his favourite songs was Don't worry be Happy, by Bobby McFerrin. He used to say that to us when we started to worry about something that was out of our control.

We would like to thank the staff and doctors at the VGH Dialysis Center for their caring and attentive care they gave our father for the last 9 years. He always went to dialysis with a cheerful smile and often came back with stories about his friends that worked at the dialysis centre.

We will miss our Papi, our Acuny, our Tio, our Gordito, we know that be with us in our hearts. His insights and guidance and love will forever be with everyone that had the good fortune to know him.
