September 11, 1935 – October 30, 2022
Vito Curalli was born September 11, 1935, in Sannicandro di Bari, Italy to Nicola and Marianna. He passed away in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, on October 30, 2022, at age 87. Devoted husband to Sofia, cherished father to Nicola (Jane) and Anna Maria (Ben), extremely proud Nonno to Daniel, Sophia, Gian-Luca, Thomas and Christian. Predeceased by his siblings Rosa (Michele) and Padre Cosimo, and remembered fondly by his brothers Vittorio (Germana), Antonio (Anna) and Agostino (Ninetta), as well as his sisters Nina (Angelo - deceased) and Carmela (Saverio), many nieces, nephews and friends. He will be remembered with much love and admiration.
Vito was a thoughtful and insightful man who let his actions tell his story. Supporting his family from the age of 9, he never had the luxury of involvement in schooling, extra-curricular activities or hobbies. At the age of 30 he forged a new path, leaving Italy for the promise of better opportunities in Canada. This meant leaving his new wife and young son, learning a new language and trading in his expert tree pruning and grafting skills for the construction trade. As soon as he could afford it, he reunited his family and together, he and Sofia worked and sacrificed in order to offer their children the opportunities they themselves were not afforded.
Vito was devoted to Sofia and she was his first priority until the day he died. He showed his children love through action, always available to put his hands to work in whatever they needed and offering nutshells of wisdom at the most opportune times. He taught his grandchildren the value of getting on with what needed to be done. He was practical in every sense, always giving 100% effort without a word of complaint, no matter the task in front of him. His work ethic was enviable and he garnered immense respect, demonstrating leadership as a foreman by working alongside his crews. In his retirement years, he finally had a chance to spend time with his young grandchildren whom he adored. As they grew, he took a keen interest in their lives, offering encouragement and concrete advice. They enjoyed his witty comments, mostly because they were infrequent but always delivered with the most brilliant timing.
He had the ability to get along with anyone, offering warm hospitality to friends and strangers, never missing a chance to intuitively assess need and to deliver the required assistance. We will miss his prolific vegetable garden, his legendary card playing skills, and his telling grin but will be left with the works of his hands and heart. Vito was a man whose life was lived in service, a man of faith, commitment and quiet strength, loyal to the end. We are so very grateful for the blessing of him in our lives.
