Obituary for Leona Olive Ekman

May 8, 1932 – June 15, 2026

Leona Olive Ekman died peacefully on June 15, 2026 while holding her daughter’s hand. She was 94 years old. Leona was born in Shell Lake, Saskatchewan into a large family and is predeceased by thirteen siblings. Leona eventually made her way to BC where she met the love of her life, Elton. They were married in 1961 and their daughter, Melanie was born in 1963. As a family, they spent many happy years on their little farm in 16 Mile.

Leona was a wonderful cook and was known for her apple pie and cinnamon buns. She and Elton enjoyed gardening and always grew an abundant harvest. They also loved the outdoors and took many local trips camping and fishing with family and friends. Leona had a creative flair and enjoyed clothing décor and painting glassware. She loved fashion and always presented her best self to the world.

After the death of her husband in 2000, Leona left the farm in 16 Mile and moved to Ashcroft, then Kamloops, and finally Vancouver to be closer to her family. She spent the last seven years of her life at the Royal Ascot Care Centre where she was treated with much care and kindness by the staff there.

Leona was a loving wife, a fun and doting mother and a good friend to many. She will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, her generosity and compassion, and her excellent sense of humour. She is survived by her daughter, Melanie and son in-law, André who will miss her dearly. Leona also has several nephews and their families who remember her fondly.

As per her wishes, a private family celebration will be held to honour her life.
