Obituary for David Richard Gloumeau

March 20, 1932 – September 1, 2026

It is with great sadness that the family of David Richard Gloumeau announces his death on September 1, 2026, at the age of 94. David died peacefully in his own bed, holding the hand of his loving wife, Phyllis, who had been by his side for more than sixty years.

Born in Barbados on March 20, 1932, David was the fourth of ten children born to Evelyn and Paul Gloumeau. The sea was an important part of his early life, and he became an avid sailor, competing in and winning many races aboard his beloved boat, Ripple. His love for Barbados and the sea remained with him throughout his life.

David married the love of his life, Phyllis, on November 13, 1965. While working as an administrator in the insurance industry, David seized an opportunity to explore greater shores and moved with his young family to Canada. They made their home in North Vancouver, where he embraced his new country and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1979, while always maintaining a deep connection to his Barbadian roots.

A devout Roman Catholic, David lived his faith through kindness, generosity, friendship, and service to others. Above all, he was a devoted family man and a good friend to all. He was always among the first to offer a helping hand and believed in greeting everyone he met with a warm smile and a kind word. David also had a wonderful sense of humour and laughed easily and often. His warmth, good humour, and genuine interest in others had a way of making people feel welcomed and at ease in his company.

David often used the Latin phrase “Tempus fugit” — “time flies.” He was not one to sit idly; David was a “doer.” He understood that time was precious and made his moments count, including the simple, everyday ones. In many ways, he embodied the motto of the Barbados Coat of Arms, “Pride and Industry,” carrying the spirit of his homeland with him throughout his life.

In his “Second Act,” David made a bold career change, working in maintenance with the West Vancouver School Board and later serving as a custodian at St. Pius X Elementary School, where his own grandchildren attended school. It was work that fuelled his heart and helped keep him active and vital well into his later years. Being part of the life of the schools brought David tremendous joy, and he carried that same sense of “Pride and Industry” into every task, no matter how large or small. He will be fondly remembered by his co-workers, school staff, and generations of students. To them, he was simply “Dave”—a reliable, jovial, and ever-helpful presence who could always be counted on. David leaves behind his beloved wife, Phyllis, and their five children: Lisa (Peter) Miiller, André (Teri), Mark, Janine (Ken) Brooks, and Matthew (Autumn).

Lovingly known as “Pops” or “Poppy” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, David was a proud grandfather to Holly (Ben), David (Alana), Paul (Karen), Mary, Royce, Charles, John, Liam, Jackson, Abigail, Violet, and James, and a cherished great-grandfather to Evelyn and Wyatt.

David is also survived by his siblings Michael, Mercedes, and Donald, along with his many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn and Paul, his brothers Gerald, Charles, Jacques, and Stephen, and sisters Joan and Renée.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and staff at Lions Gate Hospital for the extraordinary care and compassion shown to David and his family. A special thank you to Dr. Anita Lee, Dr. Daniel Mendelsohn, Cassandra Ryce, and the remarkable neuro-nurses of 6N and 6S.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour David by supporting the nurses who care so compassionately for others—and, in David’s own way, take a moment to say “Thank you so much!” to the nurses in your life.

Prayers will be offered at 7:00 p.m. on September 14, 2026, and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on September 15, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. A reception will follow in the church hall.

May the waters be calm, may the wind be at your back, and may God welcome you home.

Rest in eternal peace, David.
