Obituary for Robert MacDonald Guy

Passed away peacefully in his 80th year after a short illness, in Surrey, BC on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Robert MacDonald Guy, originally from St. John’s, NL; predeceased by his parents Dr. A. MacDonald Guy and Elizabeth Thistle Guy.
Rob leaves to mourn his loving sisters: Judith Guy Mulder, Susanne “Bonnie” (Rafael) Alcolado; and brothers: Dr. David and Dr. Donald (Dr. Cathey Sanderson- ) Guy; six nephews and nieces: John Mulder, Stephen and Christopher Guy, Gillian (Minh), Dr. Nicole (Matthew), and Adam (Amanda) Alcolado, as well as his great -nieces -nephews, extended family and many friends.
Rob was a lifelong mentor and confidant of his nephew, John; nurturing John’s passions and gifting him his first cassette player, baseball glove and track suit. They shared a deep bond over sports - from skiing at Mount St. Louis to cheering on the Blue Jays - and engaged in friendly competition over chess and stock market analysis. Despite the distance between them, they remained in close contact over the years. Rob’s passing leaves a profound void, but his influence lives on through these cherished memories.
Rob also endeared himself to his extended Alcolado family members, often sending them books, and unique Newfoundland treats, clothing, and birthday gifts from an online Newfoundland store, a habit he continued over the years by way of sharing his heart & his proud heritage.
Rob spent his formative years in Buchans, a small mining town in central Newfoundland, where his father started his medical practice in 1947. After completing high school and university education in St. John's, he returned to Buchans for a short while to work in the "pit". He was forever proud of his Newfoundland, and especially Buchans, roots throughout his lifelong journey across Canada, and remained in close contact with many of his “down home” friends thereafter.
Rob was a gifted athlete playing curling, squash, volleyball, basketball, and softball, among others, at a very high level. Нe enjoyed viewing all sports and played softball until his late 60s. His love of music began in his youth as he played the baritone & trumpet in the school band & he especially enjoyed Newfoundland & Irish folk songs.
Chess, gardening, reading & poetry were among his favorite pastimes. A gourmet cook, he took great pride in his culinary skills.
He began his professional career with National Trust in Toronto and was later transferred to Edmonton, Alberta. He received top accolades for his job performance and work ethic. Latterly he worked in Auto Sales (Ford & Honda) where he received Salesman of the Year Awards in 1989 & 1991; followed by a short stint at Totem Building supplies; all the while developing fast friendships along the way.
Eventually, he joined his brother, David, in Surrey, BC, in 2009, where he retired. He was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humour.
Rob loved his family and friends and in turn we loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed - held in our hearts forever. As per Rob's wishes, cremation has taken place.
