January 4, 1935 – December 24, 2022
Joan was born in Toronto in January of 1935, and drew her last breath on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022. She lived largely on her own terms, right to the end which was her biggest desire in the latter years of her life.
Joan was a wickedly intelligent, eagle-eyed, ascerbic and dark witted individual. If you were lucky enough to share in one of her frank conversations, you would be gifted with a bit of her seasoned view on life and the world at large. She didn't suffer fools and had a drive to see support for the discriminated, disadvantaged or less fortunate. She advocated for prisoner's rights in the '70s and participated in Habitat for Humanity (Jericho Hangers) in '76. She worked for BC Housing Commission during the 70's to the early 90's. Joan was a fierce NDP-er and a loyal supporter of Dave Barrett and John Horgan.
Joan took great pleasure in large family dinners, listening to the latest endeavours of her 9 grandchildren and visiting in her sunroom: devouring newspapers. If she liked you, she was loyal to the nth degree, opening her home and lending her time and skills.
Joan was blessed to meet her two great-grandsons before her passing. She is survived by her four children, Ted (Wendy), Erin, Bridget (Gord) and Moira (James), her grandchildren Mairead (Ryan), Al, Shannon (Evan), Conor, Lloyd, Kieran (Jack), Piper (Dane), Patrick, Oona and great grandsons Franklin, and Raife. Joan is predeceased by her husband Alfred, her son Patrick, and daughter Jude, and finally her most beloved pets, Mr. Bucton alias Corfu Mendosa / Grégoire the Invincible (cat), Charles (cat), Billy Boots Buckerfield alias Stella by Starlight (love bird) and El Syd (pup pup).
Rest in peace, Mom.
