Obituary for Mary Koh Guat Sean

May 13, 1941 – November 3, 2023

Mary Koh Guat Sean, 82, died peacefully on November 3, 2023, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, five days after unexpectedly suffering a major stroke.

Mary was born on May 13, 1941, in Klang, Malaysia, the fifth child of Koh Seong Chua and Lee Siew Kheng. In 1960, she married Harry Ong Hoon Cheng, with whom she had four children: Lilian, Ronald, Elizabeth, and Benedict. Mary emphasized education for her children despite her own limited formal education. Her children’s significant professional careers are both a testament to her commitment and an immense source of pride for her.

Mary was known for her great cooking skills, including her ability to recreate dishes based on a single taste. Besides her family, food was one of her biggest joys in life. She especially loved Canadian corn, which she ate at every meal possible when in season. Her favorite fruit was durian, which she was thankfully able to enjoy to her heart’s content during a visit to Malaysia earlier this year.

Mary also had a particular love for nature, especially flowers and small animals. She especially loved taking pictures of flowers, watching birds, and feeding rabbits around her home.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her four children: Lilian (Michael) Ross of San Jose, California, USA; Ronald (Wai Yoke) Ong of East Burwood, Victoria, Australia; Elizabeth (James) Thow of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada; and Benedict (Siew Yee) Ong of Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Her memory will also be cherished by her seven grandchildren, Emily, Philip, Rebecca, Daniel, Kathryn, Zachary, and Zoe; her four sisters in Malaysia; and many extended relatives and friends across the world. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and three sisters.

A funeral Mass will be held at Noon on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at St. Paul’s Parish in Richmond, British Columbia. Her remains will be interred at the Holy Angels columbarium at the Gardens of Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery in Surrey, British Columbia, which serendipitously has plenty of rabbits to keep Mary company.
