Obituary for Barry Norman Makinson

January 28, 1945 – September 8, 2023

Barry Norman Makinson (78) of Coquitlam, BC passed away on Friday, September 8th, 2023. Barry was surrounded by family at the time of his sudden passing.

Barry was born on January 28, 1945, in Vancouver, BC. He was raised by his loving parents, Andy and Sal Makinson, alongside his younger brother, Wayne Makinson. He resided in Vancouver, Burnaby, Kelowna, and lastly in Coquitlam. Barry was married in 1981 to Linda (Matthewson) and they had two children, Matthew and Kelly.

Barry retired from the Door industry in 2007, after many fulfilling years as General Manager and Sales Manager. Barry had many hobbies and passions. He enjoyed travelling and spoke often about all of the adventures and places he'd seen, including the Middle East and all over North America. His fondest trips were spent golfing and relaxing in Hawaii, enjoying the sights with his wife & family in Las Vegas, and following his son Matt across North America proudly watching him golf competitively.

Barry was most happy when he could enjoy the outdoors; he loved to play golf, go on long road trips, suntan, exercise, garden, and do yard work. He proudly had the nicest yard on the block. He also enjoyed catching sports on TV with a cold Budweiser, the Raiders and Yankees were his favourite teams. He enjoyed good music, going to concerts, and seeing live shows. Barry was a car lover and would fondly attend car shows and drove a few classics of his own over the years. He took pride in his appearance and always maintained a healthy lifestyle.

More than anything, Barry enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Whether it was a morning coffee with the boys at Starbucks, kicking back on the patio with his wife, or visiting with his kids, 4 grandchildren, and 2 grand-dogs, Barry was a very family-first man. He was an extremely honourable, ethical, and kind husband, Father, Papa, and friend.

Barry is survived by his wife (Linda), two children (Matthew and Kelly), four grandchildren (Layla, Ben, Connor, and Rory), and two grand-dogs (Charlie and Chico). He is predeceased by his parents (Andy and Sal) and his Brother (Wayne).

A celebration of life was held in Langley on September 16th, 2023 with close friends and family. To honour Barry's legacy, please share your memories with the family here. Think of him often and "cheers" him while enjoying a glass of Sailor Jerry's, a cold Budweiser or a hot Starbucks. In lieu of flowers, please consider "paying it forward" and living life with kindness and empathy.
