Obituary for Duncan Moir Smith Milne
July 22 1949 – March 16, 2026
Duncan Milne left this world on March 16, 2026. He leaves behind his wife, Rosemary, their children, Alison (Ken), Cameron, Eleanor (Will), grandchildren Maddie, Bea, Charlie, Maisy, Burley, Raleigh, Kipling, and his brother John (Christine).
Duncan was born in the Philippines, where his father was stationed. With subsequent postings, the family later lived in the USA, and Germany. Duncan was an avid sailor, surfer, cyclist, roller blader and scuba diver. He was an explorer who also loved to read and listen to music. He obtained his pilot's license before his driver's license.
In his mid 20’s, Duncan moved to Vancouver to pursue his post-graduate education, and there he met Rosemary. They married in 1979 in North Vancouver, where they later raised their three children. Outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, roller blading and cycling became favourite family pastimes. As a family, they built their log cabin on the lake, where they continue to gather for the summer.
Duncan was a long time member of the Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia (UASBC), exploring the coastal and inland waters of BC, documenting shipwrecks along the way. He worked in many capacities over the years, but his years operating the hyper/hypobaric chamber at Simon Fraser University, were closest to his heart.
Duncan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his 40’s. During the following decades, he fought the disease with dignity and courage. Duncan was an intelligent, multifaceted person, who loved his family. We find comfort in knowing he is free to explore again. Duncan is much loved and missed.
