April 29 1932 - July 13, 2023
Her family is saddened to announce that Mary passed on July 13th 2023 in South Surrey, BC.
Mary was born and raised in Tillsonburg, Ontario. She was the oldest of five sisters and one brother. Early life was full of adventure and joy with Mary's siblings and extended family all around. When she was 17 she met Cyril while working in the lab at the Bordens Milk Company. At age 20 they were married and over the next few years they had four children of their own. She was happy taking care of her young children and doing volunteer work for the church. They went on camping trips every summer in Ontario and in the U.S.A. exploring the great outdoors and providing great memories for the family.
Mary was an optimistic person and definitely not a complainer. She packed a lot of living into her 91 years, including a husband, Cyril, four children, Jeff, Jennifer, Michael, Amber, 5 grandchildren and numerous dogs and cats.
Some things that made Mary happy: When she and her sister Barbara were allowed to take the bus to London to visit their cousins, especially Alan and Edna, staying with their Sponenburgh grandparents, camping with Cyril and the kids in our beautiful parks becoming a nurse and working in a Hamilton hospital for many years, made possible with the help of her good friend Pat Petracca, her work with the Girl Guides in the Niagara and St. Catharines area and joyfully singing with the Haldimand Choralairs.
At age 75 Mary made a bold decision to move west to Vancouver, BC from Ontario to live with her son Michael and his wife Maria. Little did she know that shortly thereafter another Grandson Jordan would arrive and then exactly three years later Brandon was born. Mary took great pleasure and pride in helping to raise these two boys and they gave her a renewed sense of purpose and joy. After spending the first 15 and 12 years of life with "Grandma" the boys miss her immensely.
Mary loved all of her family members greatly, especially her children and grandchildren. She made friends wherever she went and enjoyed a full and healthy life for 91 years.
Mary spent the past couple of months at Peace Arch Lodge in Surrey B.C. where she was making more new friends. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and attendants that made our Mom's last few months so comfortable and happy.
Predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret, her sister Laurie, former husband Cyril and her good friend Pat Petracca, Mary is survived by three sisters Barbara, Jessie and Louise and her brother Donald; her children Jeff, Jennifer, Michael and Amber; her grandchildren Derrick, Alyssa, Gunnar, Jordan and Brandon; as well as several nieces.
