June 23, 1933 – May 9, 2022
Our beloved mother, Mary Git Ching Tsang, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2022, at home surrounded by her family. Our mother lived courageously and vigorously all her life, and she is now at peace and by the side of our father again. She is survived by her three children and their families: Paul (Cecilia Johnstone and their daughter, Julia), Peter (Lannie Chen), and Teresa (Michael Thorson and their son, Christian). She was pre-diseased by the love of her life, Tak Tsang, to whom she was married for 70 years.
Our mother was a single child born to a family of authority in Hong Kong. She married our father at a young age, and he and the children were the centre of her universe. In an era where few married women worked outside the home, she was determined to provide greater security for the family, she worked at British Military Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. She was strong, vibrant, tenacious in the pursuit of her dreams, and an incredibly loving mother. Her children were her life-long career and fulfilment of her dreams. She was artistic and extremely organized, was able to create that sense of beauty, order, and peace in our home. She was a self-taught seamstress and her children were always dazzlingly dressed. In the family, she was celebrated for her scrumptious cooking and the numerous dishes she prepared as her gifts of love day after day, year after year, for celebrations big and small. She would always find occasions to celebrate that brought us together again no matter how far away we were. To us, home was where Mom was. She had always placed highest value on family togetherness, education, discipline, perseverance, frugality, and planning for the future. It was through her vision and determination that our entire family was able to move to Canada, led by Paul in 1972, Peter in 1973, and then the parents and Teresa in 1978. Our mother’s love for us was unconditional. She absolutely adored her children and her grandchildren.
Our mother left a lasting legacy of values and traditions we all hold in high regard: resilience, perseverance, integrity and earnestness, taking responsibility, being respectful, family togetherness, empathy and kindness. We are immensely grateful to Marion Barnes, our best family friend; and to Dr. Marianne Ho-Asjoe, mom’s physician, for their care and support for years.
A private celebration of life memorial was held on May 18, 2022 for the family. Our mother will always be in our hearts, and no words can ever express our everlasting gratitude, admiration, and eternal love.
