March 17, 1934 – July 12, 2023
It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wong, Chui Kam. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 12, 2023, in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was born Chan, Chui Kam on March 17, 1934 in Hoy Shan Lin Chew Village in Toishan, Guangdong Province, China.
Chui Kam had a dream of being a teacher as she loved children and wanted to contribute to the shaping of future young minds. Out of hundreds of candidates, it was her academic marks which earned her one of the coveted placements to study at the teaching college in Toishan.
Chui Kam met Wong, Poy Jin in her teenage years, in her village in the early 50’s, and were married on January 1, 1953 in Canton City, Kwangtung, China. She returned to Toishan to finish her teacher’s studies after her marriage.
As a young married couple in China during 50’s Chui Kam and Poy Jin had to endure a lot of hardship and lived through the great famine in China. Chui Kam knew what it was like to have nothing and yet she was always a kind and generous spirit.
In 1966 with 3 young children (Gordon, Darlene, Ted), the family immigrated to Canada, where Chui Kam would have two more children (Joe, Angie). The beautiful west coast, Vancouver, British Columbia, would be her final home where she lived for 57 years.
Chui Kam was a kind spirit, loving mother, grandmother, sister of three younger brothers, an avid gardener, and a wonderful home cook. During her early years in Canada, she worked tirelessly to make a future for her growing family, holding down multiple jobs as a seamstress and a strawberry picker. In her later years as a restaurant owner of the E&B restaurant with her husband. She worked long hours to support her family and to build a better future. She and her husband owned this restaurant from 1976 to the mid-1990’s.
In her retirement years she enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends, in Hong Kong, China, San Francisco, and New York. At home, she could often be found tending to her favourite plot of roses, beautiful dahlias, and her Chinese vegetables garden. She had a wonderful affinity for babies whom she could settle easily and particularly enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren when they were very young. Her special dishes of Toishan ha gow, Toishan homestyle vermicelli, garlic roasted chicken, and sweet and sour chicken were much loved by her family, children, and grandkids.
Chui Kam is survived by her five loving children, Gordon, Darlene, Ted, Joe, and Angie, and her three beautiful grandchildren Felix, Brandon, and Belinda.
Mama, may you finally rest in peace with Baba, and until we meet again. We miss you and will always love you.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation in Chui Kam’s memory to Alzheimer Society of BC.
